Highlights

RCO2 is a Norwegian chemical engineering and technology company established in 2006. We have developed a unique chemical process (patent pending) which recycles CO2 from any combustion flue gas and converts it into natural gas (methane).2The natural gas can be fed back to the combustion process and thus significantly increase fuel efficiency while simultaneously reducing CO2 emissions.

RCO2 has verified the concept in lab, and is currently conducting research and development to thoroughly test and prove the technology.2In parallel we are preparing commercialisation and up scaling of the technology to make it available for the global market.

Power plants are the primary market application, but the following markets are also eligible for applying the technology:

  • Generator systems used in e.g. off-grid electricity generation or utility grid support systems
  • Natural gas and dual fuel engines used in mobile applications (e.g. cars, ships etc)

The CCR process - a unique technology

The patented Catalytic CO2 Recycle (CCR) technology recycles CO2 by combining two chemical processes to produce fuel: Water splitting (production of hydrogen) and Methanation (production of methane).

The technology2is based on a unique process for production of hydrogen by decomposing water (present in a combustion flue gas) at low temperature levels.2The research conducted to split water efficiently down to 300 °C is done in collaboration with two well known French research institutes. The produced hydrogen reacts with CO2 and produces methane through the known process of methanation.2The methanation process is designed to handle the high concentrations of CO2 in combustion flue gases.

The technology has an impressive customer value proposition. Without any externally added energy, the process itself can:

  • Recycle up to 60 % of the CO2 into fuel
  • Which represents an equivalent of 60 % reduction in fuel consumption
  • Which results in an electrical efficiency of over 80 %
